THE INVISIBLE ISLAND
Written & Illustrated by Shao Ni

'Do you believe in unicorns?'
Returning to the home she hasn’t seen since immigrating to Japan as a child,
S discovers a mysterious 1960s diary by a Japanese botanist hidden among her Taiwanese grandmother’s belongings.

The Invisible Island is a 48-page borderline book informed by my personal history as a multiracial Taiwanese queer woman.
I employ metaphors to transform biographical memories and collective history into a fictional narrative that incorporates elements of magical realism. The story unfolds through two parallel first-person diary accounts from different times and places, aiming to explore how nationalism, identity, and gender shape our sense of belonging.
