THE INVISIBLE ISLAND
Written & Illustrated by Shao Ni

A half-Japanese half-Taiwanese woman moves through loss and confusion in her late twenties after encountering a mysterious diary by a Japanese botanist from 1950s London in her grandmother’s attic.

The Invisible Island is a 48-page graphic fiction informed by my Taiwanese queer identity.
Juxtaposing two diaries in different times and spaces with text, drawings and found images, the ethereal and atmospheric graphic novel is an innovative experiment in pushing the boundaries of the medium. Combining intimate personal memories and metaphorical elements, the book is an autoethnographic exploration of structural inequalities related to class, gender and national identities.
